Sand demand in the Eastern Scheldt

Print Email

Decline in spatial quality

Decline in spatial quality due to a high number of civil constructions.

Due to the construction of the storm surge barrier, the sand and mud flats of the Eastern Scheldt are suffering from continuous erosion. This phenomenon is known as sand starvation. It poses a threat to nature, landscape and recreation and, in the long term, the water safety of the area.

Sand nourishment

The objective of replenishing Roggenplaat is to retain the current natural values of the flat for twenty-five years. The nourishment will counter the effects of the sand starvation and will double the foraging area.
