Multiple interests dyke reinforcement

Print Email

Flood hazard

An increased flood hazard because the flood defence does not meet the requirements and/or due to extreme conditions.

The Diefdijk Line dyke protects the Alblasserwaard and the Vijfheerenlanden against water that, during a dyke breach, would flow from the area's near Tiel, Culemborg and the Betuwe. However, the dyke was insufficiently stable and had to be reinforced. The government wanted to restore historical elements of the dyke, while residents wanted to improve traffic safety. The different interests complicated uniform management and would lead to expensive, seperated implementations.

Diefdijk Line dyke reinforcement

During the reinforcement of the Diefdijk Line dyke an integrated approach has been applied. Governments and official bodies have, from the start, collaborated with residents and other partners, creating social acceptance. By joining interests into one plan and one executing party costs have been reduced.

  • Cost savings through integrated approach.
  • Support among citizens.
