Flood hazard

An increased flood hazard because the flood defence does not meet the requirements and/or due to extreme conditions.

In the Waal, the height of the groynes above the riverbed has increased due to scouring of the channel. This obstructs the high water level flow. Groynes enhance an irregular river flow causing elevation differences of the riverbed, which can be inconvenient for shipping. Also, subsidence of the main bed occurs, and subsequently of the low river water levels and ground water level. Finally, the current conditions for flora and fauna in the water are not optimal.


Longitudinal dams and bank channels

Between Wamel and Ophemert longitudinal dams and bank channels are placed parallel to the direction of the riverflow. These longitudinal dams secure the location of the main channel and ensure an improved flow of the river during high water. the river flow, and thus sedimentation, is more regular. This reduces height differences on the riverbed and the need for dredging. Due to a decreased riverflow, erosion of the channel and reduction of the low water levels reduces. Shipping and navigation is seperated, which improves the conditions for flora and fauna.
