Inefficient muskrat and coypu management

Muskrats cause damage to banks and flood defences.

The tracing and catching of muskrats and coypus is labor-intensive and costly, mainly because the burrows of muskrats are hard to find because the entrance is at or below water level.


eDNA for muskrats

Through eDNA technology (environmental DNA technology), DNA traces of muskrats can be detected in water samples. It then can be determined whether there are muskrats in the area, and if there are, where they are located. This can help with the adjustment of allocation of capacity and other resources, which can reduce time and money needed for each catch.
