Waterproblems find their solutions

High water levels river area
Issue
Flood hazard
An increased flood hazard because the flood defence does not meet the requirements and/or due to extreme conditions.
The security in the downstream river area was inadequate. High water levels in the Nieuwe Merwede increased the flood risk as the water could insufficiently be discharged.
Solution
Depoldering
The Noordwaard is reorganized and changed from diked area to an undiked area where excess river water can flow. Through this area, the Noordwaard discharges river water of the Nieuwe Merwede when the water reaches a level of 2 metres above sealevel. This creates a decrease of the water level of 60 cm at the inlet in Werkendam and 30 cm at Gorichem, 8 km upstream.
