Water shortage

There is a lack of adequate quantities of water of a sufficient quality.

In dry summer periods, the area of Midden Delfland strongly depends on water supplied by the lake of Brielle. The lake of Brielle can not always supply enough water to provide Midden Delfland, which results in water shortage. The area also has water quality problems like cyanobacterial nuisance. Blue-green algae causes the water to be unsuitable for swimming.

S.C.H.O.O.N. (clean) water

The project includes the placement of a freshwater plant with an adjacent water harmonica. The freshwater factory cleans effluent and delivers it to the water harmonica. This is a nature reserve where the water is naturally purified. The main goal is to safe and reuse 5.5 million cubic meters of water per year. This water currently flows into the North Sea by the Nieuwe Waterweg, but will now be added to the freshwater system enclosed by the dykes.

  • Currently, the effluent gets discharged into the North Sea. By adding an extra purrification step, the water becomes suitable for the fresh water system of Midden Delfland.
  • The improved water quality will contribute to recreational possibilities such as swimming.
  • The water harmonica collects water from the freshwater factory and guides it trough a wetland system to increase the ecological value.
