Issue

Fossil fuel dependency

There is a strong dependency on fossil fuels.

The cost of building a permanent tidal power plant on remote areas and small islands does not outweigh the benefits of the consumption of renewable energy. The placement of a tidal turbine on the seabed is less expensive but because of it's location expensive in maintenance and inspection. This is why polluting diesel generators are the first choice on remote locations and small islands.

Solution

BlueTEC

Blue tec is a floating platform with a tidal turbine below. The innovation is the floating of the turbines. Conventional tidal turbines are descended to the seabed where maintenance is expensive. This is also the place where the least amount of energy can be generated. Most of the energy can be generated just below the surface. Which is were the BlueTEC turbine is installed.

Pros

  • Due to stable tidal movement, the amount of generated energy can be predicted.
  • The expensive components are located above the water or in the hull. As a result, they are protected from damage due to the water or the sun.
  • Because the (vulnerable) electronics are located above the water or in the hull, maintenance, inspection and repairs easy to do.
