Dike reinforcement not possible due to weak soil

Flood hazard

An increased flood hazard because the flood defence does not meet the requirements and/or due to extreme conditions.

The dike near Yerseke (the Netherlands) has to be reinforced with new setting stone, but the soil exists out of weak salty clay which is too weak for the placement of these setting stones. If this layer is removed and replaced with e.g. dross, it has to be carried off to be processed (dewatering and sagging), which takes up a lot of time and money. Carrying off the clay and bringing in the new material also causes nuisance in the direct environment.



Geocrete is a binder that is used to stabilize a weak layer of clay. This increases the capacity so that setting stone can be placed to reinforce the dike.



  • Less labor-intensive and faster by preventing the removal of the layer of soil.
  • Less CO2 emission through preventing the transport of clay and dross.
  • The weak layer of clay will not have to be removed and replaced.
  • Stabilisation also applicable in salty environments.
