The boundary between land and mudflat is too hard

Print Email

The potential of the area is not fully utilized

The area is not optimally managed, used or spatially arranged.

The boundary between land and mudflat is too hard. Because of this, it is hard for plants and animals to attach themselves to the dike. Also, the dike between Eemshaven and Delfzijl does not meet the safety norms.

The Multifunctional Longitudinal Dam

The Multifunctional Longitudinal Dam is part of the project 'The Rich Dike'. The longitudinal dams between Eemshaven and Delfzijl will be heightened, lengthened and seperated from the coast. This improves its functionality as safe location for birds during highwater, and it keeps the gully in place. Also, shell beaches are created, which function as breeding grounds.

  • Prevents the shifting of gullies towards the coast
  • Functions as safe haven for birds during highwater
