Waterproblems find their solutions
The potential of the area is not fully utilized
The area is not optimally managed, used or spatially arranged.
The boundary between land and mudflat is too hard. Because of this, it is hard for plants and animals to attach themselves to the dike. Also, the dike between Eemshaven and Delfzijl does not meet the safety norms.
The Pole Forest
The Pole Forest is part of the project 'The Rich Dike'. The Pole Forest consists of multiple poles surrounded by rope, on which seaweeds, sponges and mussels can attach themselves, which improves biodiversity. In between the poles, basalt rocks are placed, to which mussels can attach themselves during the broodfall (when larves sink to the surface because of the increasing weight of their shells). Also, the poles break waves and improves the settling of sediment.
